To say that 2021’s been a year completely connoted by saccharin promises and uplifting pontifications would be a mockery — a lie, a confabulation, a sentiment that would have me questioning my own sanity. (Well, more so than I usually do on any given day.)

The past twelve months have ebbed and flowed in between hope and dismay. I mean: We, basically, kicked off the year having to contend with a fucking insurrection at the Capitol; it’s something I never thought I would experience in my lifetime, let alone before my 30th trip around the sun. Wildfires continued to ravage the state, which followed a year of orange skies descending on San Francisco. Because yes: The climate crisis is real.

The wealthy go even wealthier. A few of those billionaires even went into space.

But perhaps the most cementing, year-defining moment of 2021 was the release of Covid-19 vaccines. They offered (and continue to give us) hope that, someday, (maybe in 2022) the pandemic will end. Or, at least, become “like the
